Although we only stay in Suriname together for one week, it’s enough to get a good impression of the country. Kavita has had that impression since she was little of course, Surinam is her home. For Jolanda it’s special to be able to experience Kavita’s home.

During our week we mostly stay at Kavita’s adjie (grandma from father’s side). It’s remarkable how quickly you can adjust here, the friendly people, relaxed vibes and of course the Dutch language make it feel at home here.

The surroundings of Nickerie are absolutely beautiful, wide rice fields, palm trees and mostly beams of bright sunshine. All of this makes that you have an instant holiday feel when coming to Surinam.

Nieuw-Nickerie is the third biggest city of Surinam. In a Surinamese perspective it indeed is a city when it comes to the different kind of shops and amount of population, but the fact that this city only has one traffic light might describe that ‘urbanized’ part of it better. To us, it feels more like a village than a city.

The country side of Nickerie touches us. The hardworking rice farmers, the hospitality of the family (and in Nickerie about everybody is family 😉 ), it is hard not to feel at home.

During our stay we walk to the village a few times, go and see a soccer match where we get treated to a wonderful sunset and visit Kavita’s family.

Together with them we go looking for ‘Djamoen’, one of Kavita’s favourite South American fruits and we join them on top of the combine during rice harvesting.

We also help out in Adjie’s garden. We chop off a tree, catch a big lizard (and accidently set it free – oops) and make a huge fire out of piles of leafs.

After a lovely week in Nickerie we leave to spend our weekend in Paramaribo.

To see more of the country, we book a few tours with an tour operator in the city.

On Saturday we visit “Brownsberg”. Brownsberg is a hill of 400 meters high, located in a nature reserve. Our day trip mostly consists of climbing it, which makes especially Kavita super happy. She just loves to climb ;).

The view on the water reservoir from the top of the hill and the waterfall during the hike are very pretty, but also the bus trip from Paramaribo to Brownberg is amazing. It gives an impression of the diverse nature and small traditional villages along the way.

The most important tip we get before we take the tour: don’t put on any dark clothing. It’s the season of sting flies and they love dark colours.

Good girls as we are, we listen to this tip and dress up in light clothing. However, a couple traveling with us is under the impression that dark blue jeans are really not that dark.
Lucky us: all the flies focus are stinging their butts and don’t even bother us.
Secretly we have good laughs about it… maybe not even that secretly.

On Sunday we check out the city centre of Paramaribo. On the most hot part of the day, with a hangover. Probably our best idea yet.
Despite the heat, the city centre impresses us. The old buildings are beautiful, bt mostly the mosque and synagogue that are build right next to each other. An awesome example of how we can all live together.
After our walk through town, we’re very happy to relax in the shades of the trees in “de Palmentuin”.

At night we meet up with friends in the city and make sure to not leave without a Surinamese party. We go to the “Dream café” and “Level”, where you can find both locals and tourists and where dancing is guaranteed.

On our last day in Surinam we go on the “Commewijne” river tour. We are in luck, we are the only ones on the tour together with a super nice and enthusiastic guide.
We get to visit the informative museum “Fort Nieuw Amsterdam”, wonderful mangrove trees, beautiful villages and as a cherry on the cake: dolphins!

Of course we try to lure the dolphins to us, so we are being as quiet as possible to not scare them way. Still a very loud boat next to us has more success.
Turns out: dolphins really enjoy music.. turn up the volume!

The week goes by very fast and that first impression of Surinam, that’s definitely there. We can’t wait to go back to get our second impression together.

Alhoewel we slechts een week samen in Suriname verblijven, is het voldoende voor een goede indruk van het land. Kavita heeft die indruk natuurlijk allang, Suriname is haar thuis. Voor Jolanda is het bijzonder om haar thuis ook te mogen ervaren.

Gedurende de week blijven we vooral bij Kavita’s adjie (oma van vaders kant) in Nickerie. Het valt op hoe makkelijk het hier acclimatiseren is, de aardige mensen, de relaxte sfeer en natuurlijk ook de Nederlandse taal voelen al snel thuis.

De omgeving in Nickerie is prachtig, uitgerekte rijstvelden, palmbomen en meestal een stralende zon. Dit alles zorgt ervoor dat je in Suriname een instant vakantiegevoel hebt.

Nieuw-Nickerie is de derde stad van Suriname. Voor Surinaamse begrippen is het qua winkelaanbod en bewonersaantal ook echt een stad, maar het feit dat Nieuw-Nickerie slechts één stoplicht heeft beschrijft die ‘stedelijkheid’ wel goed. Het voelt voor ons meer als een dorp.

Het platteland van Nickerie ontroert ons. De hardwerkende rijstboeren, de gastvrijheid van familie (en in Nickerie is bijna iedereen familie 😉 ), het is moeilijk om je hier niet thuis te voelen.

Tijdens ons verblijf hier wandelen we een paar keer naar het dorp, gaan we naar een voetbalwedstrijd waarbij we getrakteerd worden op een prachtige zonsondergang en bezoeken we Kavita’s familie. We gaan met ze op zoek naar “djamoen”, één van Kavita’s favorieten Zuid Amerikaanse vruchten en we mogen mee op de combine tijdens het oogsten van de rijst.
Ook klussen we wat in de tuin. We kappen een boom, vangen een leguaan (en laten die per ongeluk weer ontsnappen – oeps) en stoken van bladeren een flink fikkie.

Na een mooie week in Nickerie vertrekken we voor een weekend naar Paramaribo.

Om wat meer van het land te zien boeken we een aantal excursies bij een tour agency in de stad.

Op zaterdag gaan we naar “Brownsberg”. Brownberg is een berg van 400 meter, welke gelegen is in een natuurreservaat. Onze dagtrip bestaat uit het beklimmen hiervan, waar vooral Kavita super blij van wordt. Zij vindt klimmen zó leuk ;).
Het uitzicht op de het stuwmeer bij Brownsberg en de waterval tijdens de hike zijn ontzettend mooi, maar ook de busrit op weg ernaartoe langs traditionele dorpen geeft een mooie indruk van Suriname.

De belangrijke tip die wij krijgen voordat we op excursie gaan: doe géén donkere broek aan. Het is het seizoen voor steekvliegen en die houden van donker. Braaf dragen wij een lichte kleur, maar een meereizend stel is in de veronderstelling dat donkerblauwe jeans toch écht niet donker zijn!
Lucky us: alle steekvliegen zijn letterlijk niet bij ze weg te slaan. Stiekem lachen wij daar heel erg hard om.. waarschijnlijk niet eens zo heel erg stiekem.

Op zondag bekijken we de binnenstad van Paramaribo. Op het heetst van de dag mét kater, waarschijnlijk ons beste idee tot nu toe.
Ondanks de hitte maakt de binnenstad indruk, de oude gebouwen en vooral de moskee en synagoge pal naast elkaar gebouwd. Een prachtig voorbeeld van hoe we vreedzaam naast elkaar kunnen leven.

Na een wandeling door de stad komt de schaduw van de bomen in “de Palmentuin” als geroepen en is dat een mooie afsluiting van onze wandeling.

’s Avonds ontmoeten we vrienden in de binnenstad en maken er een Surinaams feestje van. We bezoeken o.a. het “Dream café” en “Level”, waar bij beiden een mix van locals en toeristen te vinden is en het gegarandeerd dansen is.

Op onze laatste dag samen in Suriname geven we ons op voor de “Commewijne” riviertour. We hebben geluk, we zijn de enige in de tour met een ontzettend aardige en enthousiaste gids. We zien het leerzame museum “Fort Nieuw Amsterdam”, prachtige mangrove, mooie dorpjes en als kers op de taart: dolfijnen!

Wij proberen natuurlijk de dolfijnen naar ons toe te lokken, dus doen zo zachtjes mogelijk om ze niet af te schrikken. Toch heeft de luidruchtige boot naast ons telkens meer succes. Wat blijkt: dolfijnen houden van muziek.. Volume omhoog dus!

De week vliegt voorbij en met die eerste indruk van Suriname zit het wel goed. Snel tijd om samen een tweede indruk op te doen!
