We promised ourselves lots of sun, see and beach in Panamá and we made sure that promise was fulfilled!
Our first tropical trip has “Bocas del Toro” as destination, a group of islands located West of Panamá. We arrange an Airbnb location on the main isle “Colon”, just outside of the city centre of the village with views on “Saigon Bay”.
Our location “Barrbra’s B&B” is one of the most important reasons why our time on Bocas is so amazing. Barrbra’s has a beautiful interior in a lovely house, but mostly the terrace and kitchen build over the sea, with amazing sunsets every night, starfish and hummingbirds as pets and the warm host Marco make this experience magical. From day one, Marco makes us feel right at home.
The B&B is named after Marco’s dog, Barrbra. Together with Brutus, the other dog of the house, she rules the property. The ones who know us a little bit, know that especially Kavita is not your biggest pet fan. But Barrbra and Brutus, with their sweet eyes and cheeky behaviour, have been able to melt Kavita’s heart – is there somewhere deep, deep down a dog lover in her after all?!
Because the kitchen is built over the water, all the organic trash is directly disposed in the water. The fish and other mechanism in the water eat it. It takes some getting used to, to peal your egg or whipe clean your cutting board directly into the sea! But it really works, because within a few hours the food is already gone.
Because Bocas del Toro exists out of different islands, you need to travel a little to get to a beach. We know this upon arrival and especially because the transportation by water taxi is awesome, it doesn’t matter at all to be on your way for a while.
We mostly spend our time on two of the many beaches.
“Starfish beach” (Playa Estrella) is a beach that is known for, you can pretty much guess it; starfish! The bottom of the ocean should be filled with starfish, but unfortunately we don’t discover a lot of them. Maybe we’re a little spoiled by the starfish in our own backyard at Barrbra’s :)?
This beach offers several bars, restaurants and music, so it’s a nice location to chill and meet new people.
Our other favourite beach is located next to “Bibi’s”, a nice restaurant build ove the sea on the small island of “Carenero”. The beach is small and quiet. No music, not too many tourist, just hanging out on a white beach in the shadow of massive palm trees.
There’s only one disadvantage to Bocas del Toro, which is that it can rain a lot. But also on rainy days it’s easy to entertain yourself with jogging in the rain (only Jolanda and some other Dutch guests are crazy enough of course), eating ice creams in the ice parlour of the village (the scoops are HUGE – and very tasty) or hang out at the “Cine Café”. This café offers a few spaces with big fat boys and a cinema screen. When one of the spaces is free, you can pick your own movie and watch it there for a small fee.
We also hang out with Ernesto, the owner of the “Bocas coffee shop”. When on Colon, make sure to pay a visit. Good coffee, relaxed music and good company!
Bocas helps us to entirely shake off the wintercoat-feel and when on a tropical island, one needs to go dancing of course! On Saturday night we go into town, where there’s lots of live music and good DJ’s. When we get back home, not that late and with an acceptable alcohol level in our blood (we swear!), we find out we didn’t bring the right keys to get back in. After a few failed tries to wake up some of the other guests, the only possibility is to swim around the house, climb onto the dock and knock on Marco’s bedroom door.
So, at 3 a.m. there’s a shameful and soaking wet Jolanda knocking on Marco’s door, asking if we can please come inside.
Not bringing the right keys.. that won’t ever happen to us again!
After eight days on Bocas we reluctantly say goodbye.
Barrbra’s B&B made us cherish our sunset chasing heart for eight full days and we’re grateful for the experience!
Through David, a city in the middle of the country, we travel back to Panama City. A beautiful trip by bus, which gives us the opportunity to see how beautifully green the country of Panamá really is.
While researching ways to reach our next destination, Colombia, we stumble upon a great way to get there. We book a tour through “San Blas Adventures”, an organization which schedules four day boat tours through the San Blas islands of Panamá, ending up just across the border in Colombia.
San Blas is a province of Panamá where the people of the Kuna Yana live. Although entirely integrated in Panamá, this province still has its own rules and regulations they live by.
During the tour we see a lot of the uses of the people and we are allowed to sleep and walk on their islands and villages. We also adjust to their life style: no electricity, phones, regular showers for four days. We sleep in hammocks and dorms and go back to basic.
There’s no better place to go back to basic than San Blas. For four days we end up in absolute paradise. Never ever have we seen so many beautiful sunrises, sunsets and lightning storms. Every night the sky breaks open and we are treated to some spectacular lightning. Every time again it’s absolutely impressive and overwhelming.
Every day we sail in the direction of Colombia for a few hours, we chill out on a small bounty island and at the end of the day we go for dinner and accommodation to the Kuna islands. We have a fixed group of Kuna Yala captains with us, our ‘cappies’, who navigate us perfectly in the direction of Colombia and our hosts Deeps, James and Brandon make this experience a true ‘San Blas Adventure’. From the best fresh shrimps at dinner to bonfires with s’mores, they spoil their group and do everything within their power to keep everybody satisfied. And they succeed!
These four days fly by and at the end of it we have a nice little tan, we have met a few super fun people, are even more in love with Panamá than we were before and honestly, also can’t wait for our regular shower and comfortable bed in Colombia :).
In Panamá hebben we onszelf zon, zee en strand beloofd en die belofte hebben we meer dan waargemaakt!
Onze eerste tropische trip heeft als bestemming “Bocas del Toro”, een eilandengroep in het Westen van Panamá. We boeken een Airbnb locatie op het hoofdeiland “Colon”, maar net even buiten het centrum van het dorp met een uitzicht op “Saigon Bay”.
Onze locatie “Barrbra’s B&B” is één van de belangrijkste redenen waarom onze tijd op Bocas zo fantastisch is. Barrbra’s heeft een prachtige inrichting in een mooi huis, maar vooral het terras en de keuken gebouwd over de zee, met elke avond schitterende zonsondergangen, zeesterren en kolibries als huisdieren en de hartelijk host Marco maken deze ervaring magisch. Vanaf dag één voelen we ons thuis bij Marco.
De B&B is vernoemd naar Marco’s hond, Barrbra. Samen met Brutus, de andere hond des huizes, regeert Barrbra het huis. Degenen die ons een beetje kennen, weten dat vooral Kavita niet de allergrootste fan van huisdieren is. Maar Barrbra en Brutus hebben met hun lieve ogen en brutale gedrag zelfs Kavita’s hart doen smelten – schuilt er daar ergens heel diep weggestopt dan toch een beetje een hondenliefhebber?
Omdat de keuken boven het water gebouwd is, wordt al het organische afval direct in het zeewater gegooid. De vissen en alle mechanismen in het water eten het op. Best apart om je eitje boven de zee te pellen of een snijplank zo in het water schoon te vegen! Maar het werkt echt, want het eten is binnen een paar uur verdwenen.
Omdat Bocas del Toro uit verschillende eilanden bestaat, is het altijd even reizen om bij een strand te komen. Wij wisten dit van te voren en omdat vooral het transport super leuk is, met de watertaxi, maakt het helemaal niet uit als je even onderweg bent.
We verdelen onze tijd vooral over twee van de vele stranden.
“Starfish beach” (Playa Estrella) is een strand dat bekend staat om, drie keer raden.. zeesterren. De bodem van de zee zou bezaaid moeten liggen met zeesterren, maar heel veel hebben wij er niet kunnen ontdekken. Misschien zijn we verwend door onze eigen achtertuin bij Barrbra’s :)?
Ook heeft dit strand barretjes en muziek, dus is het een leuke locatie voor een gezellige middag waar je gegarandeerd nieuwe mensen ontmoet.
Ons andere favoriete strand is een klein strandje naast “Bibi’s”, een restaurant over de zee op het kleine eilandje “Carenero”. Het strand is klein en heerlijk rustig. Geen muziek, niet veel toeristen, simpelweg lekker hangen op wit zand onder de palmbomen.
Een nadeel van Bocas del Torro is dat het veel kan regenen. Maar ook op de regenachtige dagen hebben wij ons goed vermaakt met hardlopen door de regen (alleen Jolanda en nog wat andere Nederlandse gasten waren zo gek natuurlijk), ijsjes eten in de ijssalon van het dorp (de bolletjes zijn GROOT – en heerlijk) of hangen bij het “Cine café”. Dit café heeft een aantal ruimtes met grote fatboys en een bioscoopscherm, en wanneer er een ruimte vrij is kun je zelf een film uitkiezen en deze tegen betaling kijken.
Ook maken we vrienden met Ernesto, de eigenaar van de “Bocas coffee shop”. Een must om langs te gaan, goede koffie, relaxe muziek en goed gezelschap!
Nu we eindelijk echt het winterjas-gevoel van ons afgeschud hebben, moet er natuurlijk ook gedanst worden. Op zaterdagavond vermaken we ons in het dorp, met live muziek en een goede DJ.
Bij thuiskomst, niet al te laat en met een acceptabel alcoholpromillage (echt waar!), blijkt dat we niet de juiste sleutels van het huis hebben meegenomen. Na een paar mislukte pogingen om andere gasten wakker te krijgen, is de enige mogelijkheid om rond het huis te zwemmen, de stijger op de klimmen en op de deur van Marco te kloppen.
Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Met enige schaamte staat er om 3h ’s morgens een kletsnatte Jolanda voor Marco’s deur, met de vraag of we a.u.b. naar binnen mogen.
De verkeerde sleutels meenemen.. dat doen we ook nooit meer!
Na acht dagen zit onze tijd op Bocas erop en nemen we met tegenzin afscheid.
Barrbra’s B&B heeft ons acht dagen lang ons sunset chasing hart laten ophalen en daar zijn wij heel erg dankbaar voor!
Via David, een stad in het midden van het land, reizen we terug naar Panama City. Een mooie busreis, die ons de gelegenheid geeft te zien hoe prachtig en groen het binnenland van Panamá is.
Omdat onze volgende bestemming Colombia is, hebben we een alternatieve manier gevonden om Colombia te bereiken. We boeken een tour via “San Blas Adventures”, een organisatie die een vierdaagse boottrip organiseert over de San Blas eilanden, waarbij je op dag vier aankomt in Colombia.
San Blas is een provincie van Panamá waar de mensen van het Kuna Yana volk wonen. Alhoewel volledig geïntegreerd in Panamá, hanteert deze provincie strikte regels en houden ze er een eigen wetgeving op na.
Tijdens de tour zien we veel van het volk, we mogen op hun eilanden slapen en rondlopen in hun dorpen. Ook passen wij ons aan aan hun levensstijl; geen elektriciteit, telefoons, reguliere douches voor vier dagen. We slapen in hangmatten en slaapzalen en gaan back to basic.
Er is geen betere plek om back to basic te leven dan in San Blas, vier dagen lang zijn we absoluut in het paradijs beland. Nog nooit hebben we zoveel mooie zonsopgangen, -ondergangen en onweersbuien gezien. Elke nacht breekt de hemel open en zien we prachtige lichtflitsen. Het is elke keer weer indrukwekkend en overweldigend.
Elke dag varen we een paar uurtjes in de richting van Colombia, relaxen we op een onbewoond bounty eiland en mogen we vervolgens op de Kuna eilanden komen eten en slapen. We hebben een vaste groep aan Kuna Yala kapiteins bij ons, ‘our cappies’, die ons perfect richting Colombia navigeren en ons hosts Deeps, James en Brandon maken deze ervaring tot een echt ‘San Blas Adventure’. Van verse garnalen bij het diner tot een kampvuur met marshmellows, ze verwennen hun groep en doen er alles aan om iedereen tevreden te houden. En dat lukt!
De vier dagen vliegen voorbij en aan het einde van de vier dagen hebben we een mooi bruin tintje, hebben we een aantal ontzettend leuke mensen leren kennen, zijn we nog meer verliefd op Panamá en eerlijk is eerlijk, kunnen we niet wachten op onze gewone douche en ons comfortabele bedje in Colombia :).
